SECRETS IN THE OFFICE

February 21st, 2008 by admin

Poor Jim. It seems as if every day he looses another inch of his hairline. Anyone can tell that he is extremely depressed about it. No one will say anything because he is obviously so upset about it and it seemed as if there was nothing he could do about it. It didn’t bother me that he was going bald, but then again, it wasn’t my head of hair. If it had been me I probably would have done the same thing he did. The day Jim left for vacation was the happiest I have ever seen him. Jim was all smiles when he popped his head in my cubicle to say goodbye. I should have known something was up. He was getting transplants for hair loss. When Jim returned two weeks later he wore a cap every day due to “sunburn” that he received in Cancun. It only took a few days to realize that his “sunburn” was really surgery. Jim asked if I wanted to see. It was like Pandora’s Box. You know you shouldn’t open it but, really what other option do you have? As Jim was lifting his cap I immediately regretted my decision. All I saw were little hair follicles placed into where he was previously bald. It looked horrible. Jim made me promise not to tell anyone. I don’t think I could even if I wanted to. What I saw on Jim’s head wasn’t a hair transplant, it was something out of a horror movie and I sure as heck didn’t want to share that with anyone. After a while I assumed that others guessed what was going on. Jim really wasn’t that burned and the cap was overkill. It didn’t seem as if Jim minded that the others knew. Jim was in a much better mood for the next few weeks. When he finally took his cap off he looked like a new person.

MY NEIGHBOR DEBBIE

February 20th, 2008 by admin

Once we finally had the closets taken care of Debbie went nuts wanting to get organizers for every part of our lives. We got hanging organizers for shoes, for kitchen utensils, for my baseball caps. You name it. I never knew I was so disorganized until Debbie started organizing things. I couldn't believe it. By the time we were in the new place six months everything was in its place. I mean everything! There was not a thing out of place. And if it did get out of place there was a specific place for it. I told Deb that I don't think I can live this way. It's too much work, and I can't remember where one thing or another is supposed to go. Then I made the worst mistake of all. I nearly ended up divorced. I said that that's now how Tara used to do things. Wow! I had to leave the house. It was not good. After about 3 hours Debbie calmed down and I went home. I apologized and said that I was just tired, from work and everything and all the projects around the house, and that I needed a break from finding the right organizer to put each thing in. Deb admitted that she was getting a bit overbearing on a place for everything and everything in that place.

LIVING IN CHAMPAIGN

My friend Robb is a personal injury attorney in Illinois. He went to Cornell for his undergraduate degree, and then lived in Champaign for a year to take some time off before going to law school. He ended up going to law school at Ohio State, and he graduated this past summer. Now he’s working in the city at a personal injury law firm. He seems to be doing well enough, because the last time I saw him he had just bought himself a brand new BMW 5 series. He also had a really nice place right downtown in the Gold Coast neighborhood. All of the apartments I have been to down there are all quite nice and expensive, but the only problem is there is no parking anywhere around there. There are plenty of parking garages, but they cost over $30 just to park there for one night. It would almost be cheaper just to take a cab down there to go hang out and not have to worry about parking. Robb said that he pays a few hundred a month, just to be able to park in his garage. I think that is absolutely insane. I would almost consider getting rid of my car if I lived there.

NEW COMPUTER

February 8th, 2008 by admin

I just got the most incredible free monitor for my new computer yesterday! When I went into the Mac store yesterday I found at that they were having some big sale and raffling off prizes. I figured I would stick around for the raffle, and filled out a ticket. I wandered around the Mac store for a while and checked out all of the latest gadgets and gizmos. I played around with the MacBook Air for a while too. I could not believe how thin the computer was. I told the Genius that worked in the Mac store that I felt like I would break the computer if I had it. After a little while and some endless meandering it was time for the raffle. The first prize was a brand new iPod Touch. I was not too bummed that I didn’t win it, because I had just got a new 80-gigabyte iPod for my birthday last year. The second prize in the raffle was an Apple Cinema Display 20 inch monitor. As the numbers where read out I got more and more excited as all of my numbers were matching up. I was so excited! The picture on the monitor is amazing, and it is almost as big as my television!

NORTHSIDE NEIGHBORHOOD

The salesman told me that the advantage of wireless home security is that not only are there no cumbersome wires lying around everywhere, but it’s the latest in high technology for protecting somebody’s home. And, finally, at the end of his long, long spiel, he got to the price. If my checkbook were an organ and part of my body, hearing that price alone would have made it start bleeding and I’d have to have been rushed to the closest hospital emergency room. The salesman explained that compared to their competitors their prices were quite reasonable and I agree, especially after he showed that flow chart of competing prices and companies. Still, his company’s price is really, really steep all by itself. I know home security is really valuable these days and the advantage of wireless home security with it being the most upgraded and reliable package. But should I spend all this money when no one has ever broken into my home before and might not ever? I do live in a pretty good North side neighborhood. I barely ever hear about any crimes. My wife said it was all up to me and I’m thinking about it, but I can’t make up my mind. This salesman wants a decision right now though and I’m probably going to have to put him off.

LOCAL COMMUNITIES

November 29th, 2007 by admin

I have always worked in my own neighborhood. I started out dusting shelves and unpacking clothing and putting it on hangers. I was making one dollar an hour to start. That was good pay in those times. Then I promoted to sales clerk. From there I took over the bookkeeping duties and has some other positions in the different departments and now I manage the whole store. It took years but I just loved the atmosphere and never thought of moving on to another job. There were quite a few mom and pop places and they were always happy to hire local people. They figured that everybody knew everybody’s family and it was like working with friends. The community was small enough that people cared about people in the community and everyone helped each other out. We would all gather together for breaks and lunchtime and take about local events. You worked with these people and then on the weekends you socialized with them and their families. When the clerks at the local department stores saw something they thought you might like they would even call you and say they have an article put aside for you if you would like to take a walk over and see it. Most of the time they were right. You normally shopped in that store and they knew what your tastes were, what size you need and the colors that flatter you most. If a job opened up because someone got married and moved to a different area, they would call you and say that they know your son or daughter was looking for work and would they be interested in the position that just opened up. The job interview would just be a formality of writing down your name and address for record keeping and the job was yours. You shook hands with the boss and began working. If someone in the community got married or had a baby, the local stores would send over some useful items. When my son was born, the local supermarket sent over a basket of food, the local department store sent over a baby layette. The bank even opened up a savings account for the baby with five dollars in it. When a cowboy move came to the local cinema, they always made sure my husband knew about it, as he was always the first to see any Western movie that came to town. It was like living with extended family. I remember when our elderly neighbors sold their home to go to another State to live with their son. She told me she felt she was living on another planet. Her son lives in a big city and nobody knows anyone. There is so much hustle and bustle that it is a wonder that people can survive in that stressful environment. The couple that bought their home adjusted nicely to our small community and soon they said they felt like they belonged to this local community all their lives. Everyone made them feel welcome and they joined in all the local activities. The wife volunteered to work in the local children’s ward of the hospital, reading stories to the sick children. I don’t know what life is in a big city, but I really don’t think it could be any better than my local community.
